Can I have car insurance from another state?

Hi everyone, I need help. I am a 20-year-old male in college looking to buy a car. My family lives in Texas, but I go to school in New York. Driving back and forth is impractical, so we plan to buy the car in NY and register it there. Alternatively, we might buy a certified pre-owned car online and have it shipped to NY.

One issue is that Texas requires yearly inspections for TX-registered cars, and I won’t be bringing the car home every year.

Can I register the car in NY but have the insurance plan in Texas? Registering in NY makes sense since that’s where I will be driving, but insurance there is too expensive for me. I have never been on my family’s insurance plan, so my quotes are around $2500 for six months. Can my dad add me to his Texas insurance while the car is registered in NY? NY has strict insurance laws too.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

The car has to be registered and insured in the state where it is used and garaged.

Most often, the rule of thumb is your car must be insured in the state where it is registered. Every state has its own rules and laws.

you can’t have car insurance from another state if you live in a particular state. Your car insurance needs to be from the state where you register your car and where you primarily live. This is because states have different minimum insurance requirements and regulations.

I agree with this, the different State laws cannot allow you to get insurance in a different state

A car registered in NY cannot have insurance from Texas. In New York, you will need to register and insure it.
