Can I insure my car in a different state?

Hi everyone,

I’m in a bit of a unique situation and could really use some advice. I recently moved to a new state for a temporary job assignment that will last about a year. However, my permanent residence (where I pay my taxes, have my driver’s license, and am registered to vote) is still in my home state.

My question is: Can I insure my car in the new state even though my permanent residence is in a different state? Or do I need to keep my car insurance based in my home state?

I’m trying to avoid any legal issues and want to make sure I’m properly covered in case of an accident. Has anyone else dealt with this before? What did you do? TIA

Insure a car registered in a different state by providing the insurance company with the car’s details, including the registered state. Ensure you meet legal requirements for both the registered state and the state where you will be using the car.

While your permanent residence is in another state, you can likely insure your car in your new state for the year. Most car insurance is based on where your car is garaged overnight, which is likely your new place. Contact your current insurance company to see if they can cover you in the new state. If not, shop around for insurance in your new state. Just be sure to update your address with the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in your new state to avoid any registration issues. This way, you’ll be legally compliant and covered in case of an accident.

The duration for processing insurance claims varies widely depending on factors such as the type of claim (auto, health, homeowners, etc.), complexity, and the insurer’s processes.

This is very normal. Most insurance companies want you to have coverage but the location where the vehicle is parked at night.
