Can I register and insurer my car in different states?

I’m in a bit of a pickle. I recently moved to Arizona for a new job, but my car is still registered and insured back in my home state of Vermont. I once used my friend’s address in Vermont to get cheaper insurance while I was in college but that obviously won’t work anymore.

Can I just keep my Vermont registration and insurance for now, or do I need to switch everything over to Arizona? I’m a little confused about the legalities, and I don’t want to get pulled over for something silly.

In Arizona, you are normally required to register your vehicle and obtain insurance within a specific time after becoming a resident. My cousin was in a similar scenario and he encountered legal issues. He took the proper processes and since you went there for a new job, you are probably now considered a resident. That implies you should update your registration and insurance information. Continuing to use your Vermont registration and insurance may result in difficulties. If you are stopped while driving with out-of-state documents, you may risk a fine or other consequences. I learned from his experience and urge that you follow the same approach.

Vermont plates in Arizona? Not a good idea! Register and insure your car in Arizona (it’s the law). You might even get a better insurance rate! Switch it over to avoid fines and ensure you’re covered.

Hello, Oliver James. You cannot obtain plates in New York without proof of New York insurance. NY is really tight; don’t mess around.
