Pretty much what I said, I was airborne for about a second, which was pretty cool. This happened in Florida. I have no idea if I should file a claim. I didn’t file a police report because I’m worried they might say I’m at fault. I know the damage is about 4k. I guess 2024 isn’t my year.
File a comprehensive claim. Make sure to confirm that the debris flew off and hit your car, not that you hit a stationary object. A comprehensive claim has a deductible but won’t affect your insurance rates in most states. Not sure about Florida, but Google Florida auto insurance basics and it should help.
@Tan
This. Comprehensive claims won’t raise your rates. Just explain that the debris flew off the truck and hit your car, and you couldn’t react safely in time.
@Tan
Filing a claim might help cover the cost, but I get why you’re hesitant.
@Tan
Yes. Just be sure you can prove the debris hit your car and not the other way around. Florida is a no-fault state, so it’s important to have the right coverage.

since it’s a no-fault state
This doesn’t affect comprehensive/collision. That’s about medical bills.
Find ‘Debre’ and let him know you’re not happy with what happened. Tell him he needs to take responsibility and pay for the damage.

Hitting Debre is a real tragedy.

My Uncle Debree said Debre was a lot of fun back in the day.
I see a lot of comments here saying don’t tell them it hit the road. The damage shredded your tires, so the first thing they’re going to think is it hit the road. Just tell the story honestly and to the best of your memory. Don’t try to bend it one way or the other, or you’ll just get yourself into trouble. The insurance will definitely want photos of the damages. If you have coverage, they’ll inspect the car. The adjuster will tell you whether this falls under comprehensive or collision. Don’t rely on this forum to figure that out.
@Orion
Exactly, adjusters can tell if the damage came from ‘debre,’ so don’t risk a fraud charge.

Is it just the tires? When you say it’s 4k, is that an appraisal you already got?
There’s also body damage.
File a claim if you have coverage. If not, you’ll have to pay out of pocket.
Unless the debris directly hit your car (not hitting the road first), your insurance will likely call this a collision claim and mark it as an at-fault accident on your record.
Flying debris. Comprehensive claim. Pay the deductible and move on.
FILE THAT CLAIM. Why are you paying insurance if you’re not going to use it when it’s necessary? There’s no way to track down the truck and its owner for the 4k. It doesn’t sound like you were at fault, so let your insurance company go after the truck. Do it.
Get a dash cam for next time. This time, file a police report and hopefully you have some helpful info about the work truck.
If you say it’s fire damage, it’s usually a collision-related claim because you hit something on the road. Sorry you’re dealing with this.
Just tell the story accurately. The debris flew off the truck and hit your car. It didn’t hit the road first, so once it’s on the road, it’s avoidable.
