Insuring a commercial vehicle as a personal vehicle

I purchased a vehicle from the company that I work for. It is a Chevy 3500HD. The VIN indicates that it was an “incomplete vehicle” from GM and then sent out for a service bed to be installed.

When trying to add this vehicle to my personal auto insurance policy, the VIN is not accepted. Representative from my carrier states that they do not allow commercial vehicles on a non-commercial policies.

I bought the truck to have around in case I needed a truck for truck stuff. I’ve hit a roadblock in insuring it, though.

Any advice?

You would insure it as a commercial vehicle since it falls under that category. Insurance companies typically have classifications or ratings for different uses beyond just commercial or personal. However, they determine the specific classification based on your company’s needs.

This is the approach my company takes. Commercial truck for non-business use.

Some companies do not offer commercial auto policies. Therefore, you’ll need to locate an insurer that provides coverage specifically for commercial vehicles. It seems unlikely that you can insure it as a personal vehicle since your company sold it for employment purposes. Even if you manage to find coverage for it as a personal vehicle, claims arising from its use for work may not be covered.
