Is it possible to get auto insurance without owning a car?

Hi everyone, I live in the city and don’t own a car. I’ve been paying Geico $217 every 6 months for insurance, even though I don’t have a car listed on the policy. This lets me rent cars without buying insurance from the rental company. By the end of the year, I don’t rent cars often enough to save money with Geico instead of using the rental company’s insurance. But I’m okay with possibly losing a few bucks because I feel secure having a real insurance company behind me, not just rental car insurance. It also lets me rent cars spontaneously for weekend trips when I find good deals. Before, high rental insurance costs stopped me from renting, so I appreciate the freedom and peace of mind this gives me.

I’m wondering if this policy is legitimate. If I have an accident in a rental car, will Geico cover me? I asked the agent about it, and he assured me that Geico has a product for my situation. I’ve never doubted this policy, and I can see my coverage, but I’m curious if anyone sees any problems with it. Should I cancel it? I like the peace of mind it gives me, and I usually break even each year. Plus, one big trip could make it really worthwhile.

I have Non-Owner Auto Insurance via USAA. It would cover me for all rental automobiles, borrowing from friends, and, most importantly, for myself. If a vehicle strikes me when I’m bike or walking.

So yes, you’re fully protected.

Naturally, if you don’t own a car, you won’t require or have auto insurance. But some credit cards come with insurance for rental cars. To find out what is and is not covered, contact your bank.
