Is This a Good Level of Auto Insurance Coverage? (IL, USA)

Hi everyone,

I am reviewing my auto insurance coverage and want to ensure it is adequate. I am based in Illinois and would like to know if the level of coverage I have is considered good. What are the standard or recommended coverage levels for Illinois drivers, and are there any specific coverages or limits I should make sure I have?

I’d suggest reviewing your coverage limits. The state minimums are quite low and might not be sufficient if you’re involved in a serious accident. Increasing your liability limits and adding comprehensive coverage can be a good idea. Also, look into personal injury protection (PIP) if you want extra protection for medical expenses.

Hello Dylan, Illinois mandates minimum liability insurance for drivers, but these limits may not fully protect you. Review your policy and consider these options:

Minimum Required Coverage:

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident.
  • Property damage liability: $25,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident.

Recommended Coverage:

  • Increase bodily injury liability to $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident.
  • Raise property damage liability to $100,000 per accident.
  • Match underinsured motorist coverage to your bodily injury limits.
  • Add comprehensive and collision coverage for broader protection.
  • Consider rental car reimbursement and medical payments coverage for additional security.

I would increase the deductible to a $1000 or $2500 if available. You should not claim anything around $1000-$2000 range anyway as your premium increase in the subsequent years would exceed that amount making a $500 deductible useless.

I’d remove rental reimbursement as well. If you can afford a $1000 deductible, you can afford to pay for a rental on your own. Besides, the process to get a rental can be onerous and $60/day isn’t something that will make or break you. In essence, you’re insuring against something that you don’t need. Like insuring you have a meal every night. It’s important but it’s not something you need to insure against.

Ditto roadside assistance, some credit cards offer that perk.
