Looking for recommendations for pay-by-mile auto insurance - currently with Metromile but my monthly bill has literally doubled

I just drive about once every two weeks to do food shopping and to keep the fluids in my car circulating and the battery well charged. My car is effectively my wife’s backup vehicle because I work from home, and that’s the only reason I keep it (it wouldn’t be worth much to sell anyway).

After nine years of service with Metromile, my monthly fee has quadrupled this year, and I’m not receiving any more benefits (I haven’t submitted any claims). I appreciated their service up until this year, when it seems like the value has diminished.

I’m trying to get suggestions for more pay-per-mile insurance providers.

Nationwide is a highly reputable company, but the suitability of their coverage depends on the specific terms of the policy.

I’ve been with Mile-Auto for two years, and they’ve been excellent. However, I recently received notice that they are withdrawing from Texas. Does anyone else have information on this? Since I haven’t filed any claims, I don’t believe it’s an attempt to drop coverage for existing customers.

I hope not, especially since I recently purchased their insurance. I reside in Texas.

I’ve been with Mile Auto in Texas for over a year now. Today, July 10, 2024, I received a notice dated July 1, 2024, stating that due to circumstances beyond their control, Mile Auto is temporarily pausing their program in Texas and cannot renew my policy. Have you found another insurance company that offers per-mile-based coverage? My policy is set to cancel on August 5, so I need to make a decision soon.

I opted for Mile Auto after using an auto insurance comparison site where I entered my annual mileage (4,000 being the minimum allowed), and it exclusively recommended Mile Auto. From what I gathered comparing three different pay-per-mile insurers on various sites, Mile Auto seems to have the most competitive rates. However, their services are only available in select states. Instead of using a mileage tracking device, they require you to take monthly photos of your odometer. Their website is quite basic, primarily functioning for obtaining a quote. There’s no login feature; customer support is available via email and phone.
