Can You Have Car Insurance in Another State?

Hi people…
I’m in a bit of a unique situation and could use some advice. I’m considering moving to another state but will be spending a lot of time in my current state for work. Is it possible to have car insurance in a state different from where I live? Has anyone dealt with this before or know how it works?

Yes, you can have another car Insurance in Another state.

NY law requires someone to switch their drivers license/registration within 30 days of becoming a resident. Since you’re not becoming a resident there’s no requirement to register the vehicle here if you’re just here for school. You should however advise your TX insurer that the vehicle is being driven/garaged in NY. Additionally most states will accept an out of state safety and emissions Inspection in lieu of their own if you’ve been out of the state for school/military etc for an extended period.

Nope. A general rule in auto insurance is that you can only take insurance in the state where your car is registered.

But if you are going to spend a lot of time in the state where you are relocating to, then you should consider contacting the insurance company regarding dual residency and auto insurance
