My car was sideswiped while parked. What should I do next?

As the title says, my 2022 Tesla Model 3 was parked outside my workplace when it was sideswiped by a commercial vehicle trying to get past a double-parked car. The incident was fully recorded by my car, and I got an alert on my phone that the car alarm was triggered. I quickly went outside, saw what happened, and took down all the driver’s info.

I contacted their insurance company, New Hampshire Insurance Co. (AIG), and filed a claim. They said someone would get back to me in 2 business days, but no one has. Every time I try to reach them, the wait time is 1 to 2 hours. When I finally got through, they told me my claim was canceled and sent to a third-party adjuster (York Risk Services Group, also known as Sedgwick). They gave me 4 phone numbers, but 3 were disconnected, and the last one just redirected me to their website.

On the website, I was given another phone number, and after an hour of waiting, I spoke to an agent who couldn’t find my claim and transferred me to another department, but the call got disconnected. I’m really lost on what to do now.

Any advice would be appreciated. The accident happened in NY.

About 20 years ago, I was sideswiped by a company truck on I-10. The driver was going around 90 mph. The grill, bumper, and front fender of my car were badly damaged. I called 911 and followed the truck until they confirmed the license plate. The truck had company numbers but no company name.

I met with the sheriff an hour later, but he wasn’t much help. He only found out that it was an Enterprise corporate rental. Since we used Enterprise at my job, I got the contact info for our account manager, who then gave me the company’s name.

The company had several offices, so on Monday morning, I called their East Coast office (I was in CST at the time). I asked to speak with the health and safety manager, who was very helpful. I explained what happened, and he gave me the name and number of the local manager, who he knew personally and was sure wasn’t the driver.

When I spoke to the local manager, I explained the incident. He checked into it and then told me, “Get me three estimates. I need to take care of this.”

I’m glad I got the company info. If I hadn’t chased the guy down for the tag number, I would have had to pay for the damages out of my own pocket.

Do you know the name of the company the other driver worked for? If you do, Sedgwick can use that name to find the insurance policy and file a claim, as long as one hasn’t been filed already and you don’t have the policy number.

I’ve been through this before, and it can be really frustrating. You might get transferred a lot and have trouble getting the claim filed. You could also ask the other driver to file the claim.

If you’re still having trouble, you could file a claim with your own insurance.

Thanks a lot for your response. Yes, I gave all the details to Sedgwick, but they said they couldn’t find the company even though I provided the driver’s name, policy number, and company name. I’ll contact the other driver to file the claim.

I’m worried that if I file through my own insurance, my rates might go up (though I’m not sure if that’s how it works). I’d prefer to keep my insurance out of it if possible.
