I’m planning to switch my auto insurance to a different provider but not sure about the steps involved. What’s the best way to go about it? Any tips to make sure I don’t miss anything during the switch? Would love to hear how you all handled it!
You could have your new agent notify your old agent with a letter that includes your start of coverage date and your new policy number.
A few years ago, I switched from Geico to Progressive and was able to coordinate the start of the new policy with my expiration of the old one. About two months later, I got a notice in the mail from the Motor Vehicle Commission that my license was going to be suspended in 30 days because I had been reported as an uninsured motorist. I went to the MVC after work one day and couldn’t take care of it because it was actually something that had to be taken care of by a judge, so that there was no option to get it taken care of in the evening or on a Saturday. It was incredibly frustrating and I actually had to ask my partner to go for me because I couldn’t get there during their normal hours before the deadline. The clerk at MVC, after I told him what happened and why I got the notice, asked me one question: “Let me guess, your old insurer was Geico?”
Just a heads up for anyone. It’s a good idea to provide details of your new insurance to your old insurer.
When I switched my auto insurance provider, I found it helpful to follow a few key steps to ensure a smooth transition. First, I researched and compared quotes from different insurers to find the best coverage and rates. Once I chose a new provider, I made sure to overlap the start dates of the old and new policies to avoid any gaps in coverage. I also notified my current insurer of the cancellation date and confirmed the cancellation in writing. Finally, I reviewed and updated any automatic payment methods associated with my old policy and verified that the new policy was active. This approach helped me avoid lapses in coverage and ensured a seamless switch.
Switch car insurance in 8 steps: compare options, check penalties, compare quotes, contact current carrier, research new company, avoid lapse, cancel old policy, access new ID cards.
